The Balance in being Highly Competitive in Youth Basketball – the “I GET TO” attitude.
We asked Aaron Dickson this question:
We love his response. Continue reading “The Balance in being Highly Competitive in Youth Basketball – the “I GET TO” attitude.”
Aaron Dickson is from a coach’s family and has been around sport his whole life. He played hoops in college on a full scholarship (where he met his wife also a full ride hooper) and has been training basketball players for the last 10 years. Aaron is passionate about Jesus, his family, sport and discipleship which is why he started Pursuit Sports, a ministry that invites followers of Jesus (who speak sport at a high level) to disciple athletes through skill training. Pursuit Sports is very simple: we train skills for 30 min and do leadership development for 30 min in order to invest in athletes.
Lawrence to look for stories on coaches, teachers who changed lives
Came across a great article that speaks to the heart of what we are trying to do at Tourney.Life. Kevin Lawrence is actively looking for stories of coaches (and teachers) that have had a positive impact on their players & students. Check out the full article.
It started with a realization:
And the problem centers around “looking at the here and now. For most of them, typically tunnel-vision parents, all that matters is either winning or making sure that their child gets enough playing time.”

Evaluating Skills?
Hey guys, I have a first training session coming up for a new team in a couple of weeks.
What sort of drills do you recommend to evaluate the basic skills of your players? Specifically ball handling, shooting, on ball defence and rebounding.
Thanks guys much appreciated!

Offense of the day: The Spread
I am posting because before this season I had never heard of it and it is getting all teams at the high school I coach at open. The best part so far has been the amount of layup attempts we have gotten and how we have been able to compete without having many skilled shooters in the program.
So if you are A high school coach that needs a system because your team can not compete with the talent around you, or if you are a traveling coach looking for something that is not dependent on outside shooting, I highly suggest taking a look at the Spread Offense.
Also I highly encourage others to make a post if they have an offense or something that they have found success with!
If anyone wants a more in depth write-up I would be more than happy to do one when I have time. let me know.

At what shooting % would you consider a shooter to be a non-factor?
If someone shoots <10% from the 3, and not that much higher outside of the paint, would you still have your middle school players closely guarding them?
I’m much more concerned about players scoring layups in the paint against us, so I’ve been teaching my team to slack off when playing man-to-man to protect against the drive. Is this poor coaching?
For clarification, I coach in NYC where there are great dribblers and drivers, but poor shooting across the board.
